VOLCANIC: Vase

My first experiment on the ceramic 3D printer.
This piece inspired and started the VOLCANIC range, which showcases Earth's fragility through ceramics. The deep, earthy, dynamic glaze emphasises the printer's mistakes and imperfections.

This playful piece helped me learn about the machine's capabilities and limitations, revealing the importance of creating a strong, solid base - a challenge due to quick drying rates that caused significant warping and difficult baseplate adhesion.
These issues transformed it into a sculptural vase for dried flowers, as the base isn't watertight.
The ridge texture created by the 3D printer enhances its earthy aesthetic, emphasising its fragility. This fragility is further highlighted by blue-white colour pooling in the cracks from the reactive, variegating iron glaze.
This vase benefits from additive manufacturing -> minimising waste by using only the material needed for the object.
